Barkur is a village in Udupi district of the Karnataka state in South India.

History

Barkur was the ancient capital of the Tulu kingdom or Tulunadu.The people of Barkur spoke the Tulu language. But the present day people of Barkur speak Kannada.

Even today at Barkur one can find ruins of forts used by ancient kings. Some inscriptions in hale kannada languages are found in and around Barkur.

It is said that Barkur had 365 temples, ruins of few can be seen even today.

Its a beautiful, quite place with green evergreen trees. It was also the center of Jainism, with well preserved basadi (temple) which can be seen today.

It is close to Bennakudru, which has a famous Mogaveera temple considered sacred by all the fishermen of the state.
